Food allergies in dogs

A food allergy is an affliction frequently seen in dogs. This is where there is an allergenic reaction to certain ingredients in the food, usually flavourings, preservatives and animal proteins. Food allergies can occur in all breeds and in both dogs and bitches. The complaints usually start before the puppy is 6 months old.

The most obvious symptom of a food allergy is itching, all over the dog's body. Affected dogs will often be seen biting their paws and scratching their ears. In some cases, even the intestines can be affected, causing vomiting and diarrhoea.

The only way of diagnosing a food allergy is by giving the dog diet food. It must not contain any of the ingredients the dog might have developed an allergy to. In our practice we use "CHAMP LAMB & RICE". Lamb is the only source of animal protein it contains so it is ideal.

For this method of diagnosis to be effective, the dog must be given nothing but CHAMP LAMB & RICE diet food for at least six weeks, with no additives or extras. And that means no treats, like dog biscuits or cheese!!

Simply by changing the diet in this way, the complaints will disappear after a few weeks. As "CHAMP LAMB & RICE" is a good, wholesome food, the dogs can eat it for the rest of their lives without any problems at all. Changing the diet or giving the dog extra's or treats will often cause the complaints to return and is therefore discouraged.
